Here’s a quick update of what we’ve been up to.
First, it snowed. A lot.

There was enough snow that David and Zoe made an igloo.

We made snow cream. (About a cup of milk, a bit of vanilla and a bit of sugar, stir it up and pour it over a bowl of fresh snow. Yummy and it tastes like childhood.)

And we never lost power. Whew.
Christmas came and I made chocolate babka. I used Martha Stewart’s recipe and it was really, really good. Like new Christmas tradition good.

I made a Martha’s Croquembouche too and somehow managed not to take any pictures. However, it was probably the best dessert I have ever made. The caramel cream in the middle of the puffs is amazing. Douglas helped me with the caramel and it was the first time I ever let it cook long enough. Delicious burnt sugar flavor. (As a side note, it cracks me up that Martha Stewart says that “it looks complicated but is easy to assemble”. Its totally complicated and involves super-hot, sticky sugar that burns but it is very, very good.)
Tommy turned three!

(Buttermilk chocolate cake, with leftover caramel cream in the middle and chocolate cream cheese frosting)
And I made this scarf yesterday because it was easier to make than finding the opportunity to take a shower. Its from Weekend Sewing and took maybe 15 minutes to make. I serged the edges because I could and I’m trying to learn how to use my new toy machine.

And then I made bread pudding with the leftover babka. There is really nothing wrong with chocolate and bread. And butter. Especially when you mix them altogether.
your blog is so fresh and interesting. it makes me want your life……what a wonderful job you are doing with your children and family. you are a great role model for good old fashioned ingenuity and creativity. how lovely.
Having been one of the taste-testers for your test kitchen, I offer that in retrospect, probably the biggest yum was that cake for Tommy’s birthday, followed closely by the croquembouche and babka. Actually, maybe the babka bread-pudding was second.
Anyway, it was all totally amazing, and it was the best Christmas ever. Oh, and your little hat thing looks cute. And I’ve been using your serger on the sneak. Hope that’s okay :-D
It was wonderful to get to participate in some of that loveliness. Y’all’s work table is a sight to behold.
so glad to see that you never lost power and that you had a wonderful Christmas together! You are certainly an inspiration to me…however, I still sit here on my butt! One day right?!
