Herman the Helper – by Robert Kraus

Herman the Helper is our one-year-old’s go-to book. He loves this book so much that when we get to the end of it, he cries until we read it again. He walks around the house saying “Helper. Helper. Helper.” It’s about the cutest thing I’ve ever seen.

But I have to confess, I don’t really understand why he loves it. I mean, the book has nice pictures, and a fine story about a little octopus named Herman who likes to help (great lesson, right?). But let’s face it, this book is not going to win any Pulitzer prizes.

Now, that being said, it’s hard to keep a one-year-old’s attention, and this book does it. The two-year old likes it as well. And it’s fun enough that the parents don’t mind reading it a few (dozen) times per day. On top of all that, it was brand new when I was a kid, which gives it an extra boost of nostalgia.

Get it from Amazon.
