Homemade Crackers

One of the things I hate buying at the grocery store are crackers.  So much packaging, so expensive and so few actual crackers in the box.  But on the flip side, they are a fabulous go-to quick snack with peanut butter or cheese or hummus or even just plain, so I always buy them.  And I am sad.

So I decided to stop being sad and try to make them.

Turns out its easy!  Flour, wheat bran, salt, butter, water, and 8 minutes in the oven and boom, I have wheat thins.  I used the recipe from Vegetarian Cooking for Everyone but basically, the technique is like making a pie crust.  I’m going to try freezing some of them (as recommended in the cookbook) to see if I can get them closer to the “convenience” of store-bought.  This recipe also has a lot of butter in it so I’m going to try some other options as well.  But proof of concept has been reached!
