No Cable TV But I Still Like the Occasional Movie

When we moved to our house 3 years ago, we decided not to hook up the cable. We figured that we didn’t want our kids watching TV all the time, we didn’t want to watch TV all the time and its an expensive monthly cost. We’ve been really happy with the choice, though I’ll admit that flipping through the 5 channels we get over the air is not nearly as much fun as the 200+ we used to have. On the happy side though, neither of our kids watch TV.

Now, I do still love to watch a movie so we’ve done a couple of things to support that particular habit. Netflix.com is the obvious choice but I also love Amazon Unbox as a spur of the moment option. We just pick what we want, download it onto the computer and then hook the computer to our TV (we use the Gigaware PC to TV converter) and then watch it. They have a pretty good selection of movies and TV episodes and even some for free. Netflix has a similar service as part of their subscription but their selection is much smaller.

This way, we only pay for the shows and movies we actually watch. Given how little time and energy we have for TV, it works out to be a win-win situation for us.
