I just ordered our first flock of chickens.  Gulp.  I’m very excited and very nervous, but mostly excited!

We’re trying out McMurray Hatchery and I ordered Rhode Island Reds, Buff Orpingtons, Barred Rocks, and Araucanas and then two white Silkies because they look neat.  The first four are good layers and also good for eating.  I’m excited for the Araucanas because they lay blue tinted eggs, which should be interesting to see.

Basically, we order the chicks now and they will be mailed to us via the Post Office the first week of March as day-old chicks.  Apparently, chicks can live off their yolk supplies for the first day of life so the mailing works.  I’m kind of excited to go the Post Office to pick up a box of live chicks.  Amazing.

So now we have our deadline for getting the coop and the chicken yard ready.  Exciting!!

You are probably way ahead of this, but you might check out “Home Farmer” from The Good Life Press. I read the December issue last week at Ocracoke and it was a lot of chickens and coops and dirt and such. Plus, it’s from the UK so they talk a little funny.

That’s amazing that you can get chickens through the mail. So cool!

  4. Everyone probably figured this out already, but the reason we are getting Silkies (they’re the poofy white ones with blue skin) is that Daddy thinks they are really purty. Kyle, we’ll totally check out “Home Farmer.” Looking for ideas on chicken coops now.

  5. Oh, and by “Daddy” I mean “I” not “Paul Brunton.”
