I would suggest in the car, to just take away the attention (ie. no talking). For us just "going in time out" even if there's no designated space, is enough of a threat. I also think apologies are important - and sometimes if an apology is said sincerely, and the injured party is OK, then a time out isn't necessary. Good luck! We do the same for time outs.
