MOTH is a listserv started in 2000 for parents living on Capitol Hill. If you’re a parent and you live on Capitol Hill in Washington, DC then you’re eligible to part of the Moms-on-the-Hill listserv. The only way to join is to be invited by another parent on the Hill, who then sends your email address to the moderators to be added.
Sounds a little funny at first, but it really is a great listserv and its a huge benefit that it requires an invite from someone else already affiliated with it. The list is surprisingly polite, very on-topic and there are not a ton of people trying to sell something on it. Besides the great parenting advice, its an invaluable resource for finding other parents and kids in similar situations and its great for finding recommendations for contractors and other services in the city.
So, if you want to be a member, just head to Lincoln or Stanton Park, Eastern Market or your block and find someone with a stroller. Chances are, they’re a part of MOTH and they can get you hooked up.

I just read your post on Moth. I am available to babysit three/four days a week in the afternoon. I am 26 years old, Italian, and I have already babysat for moms that live on the Hill. I myself live on the Hill.
If you are interested, I would like to meet you and your child/children to discuss.
All the best,

Hi,
New to DC. Young professionals trying to get our 7 year old son into a good school. We would like to get into Maury Elementary. Any advice? Could someone invite me to MOTH? Thanks.
Don’t believe all the hype that public schools are inadequate because DC does have some really good public schools Watkins was great when I went there (less than 10 yrs ago) and DC does have a couple of excellent high schools: School without walls Banneker Duke Ellington school of the arts. I guess what I’m saying is don’t rule out the option of public schools just because there are quite a few that are not up to par.
Hi everyone. I’m 32 and 4 months pregnant with my first child. I just moved to the navy yard area, just south of eastern market. Would love to meet up with other moms in the area. Would someone invite me? Thanks so much, and I look forward to being part of the group!

Recently moved to Washington DC and live in Capitol Hill- we have a newborn now and I have started my search for a nanny. I have to return to work by October and looking for someone to come to our home or possibly sharing a nanny with another family. Would be grateful for some assistance. Thank You- Jenna
Just learned about MOTH from a husband of a member who I randomly talked to on the metro. I don’t think he knew about the referral requirement because he strongly recommended I join, but didn’t mention that part. We live just south of the Hill (hopefully that still counts!) and would love to join. Would appreciate it if someone would email me and sponsor us.
Thanks!
Hello, I live in Mt. Vernon Square but work on Capitol Hill near 10th and Penn SE. I would like to join your group because I want to enroll my son in a daycare near my work. Also, if anyone knows about a good daycare that is accepting infants (Nico is almost 4 months), I would love to hear about them. Would appreciate if someone would sponsor me for referral. Thanks!!

Hi, I’m due any day now with my first and we just moved in near Union Station. I’m happy to walk over to Eastern Market or one of the parks (and I’ll be at CHY on Saturday if I don’t pop first) but as a complete stranger I hate the idea of accosting some poor Mom with a stroller just to get an invite to MOTH. Would anyone be willing to extend an invite? Alternatively – are there any MOTH members out there who’ll be at CHY this Saturday? Thanks.
Hi, I also am a mom of 2 with 1 on the way, and will be moving to DC next month, which I am terrified about, and so it is comforting to know that there ARE other young moms/kids who live there! I would love to be added to MOTH, if this is an appropriate way to be added by someone? If not, just let me know. I appreciate it!!!

Hi
I am 42 and my husband and I are adopting a little girl from China. We live in the Logan Circle area but would love to join MOTH nonetheless -we do realize that most of the child oriented activities will be on Capitol Hill! If someone would invite me to join the group I would really appreciate it.
Many thanks

Hello,
My name is Sophia and I am 22 years old. I am currently a student at Coppin State University, majoring in Elementary Education. I am looking for some babysitting opportunities for weekends and the month of December. I enjoy working with children and I have experience. I currently work as an afterschool instructor at a local preschool on the hill (Northeast Stars Montessori). I have been working there for 2+ years and I absolutely love it. Not to mention, I have babysat for two families (ages 2 & 4) . I enjoy creating crafts, reading books, taking walks outside, visiting museums and baking cookies! Please contact me (sbmonet007@aol.com) if interested. Thanks.
I am pregnant with my first child (due in early March) and would love to join the MOTH listserv. I will be looking for moms of similarily aged children and just advice about services in the Capitol Hill area. My husband and I are renovating a house on D & 17th NE.
Amy, I’m still waiting for an invite. If you are “in” can you invite me?
We live at 13th and Maryland, NE and have been fixing up our place for the past few years. My husband could tell you anything you need to know about renovations (if you are do it yourself kind of people).
I’m due at the end of July with our first child and a girlfriend already told me I should get on a daycare waiting list (!). It sounds like you and I are looking for similar advice from other moms. I’m particularly interested in finding someone close by who might want to do a nanny share with us. Let’s stay in touch.
Sara
Hi Sara,
My husband and I are expecting our first in June. We live on Elliott St., NE, just around the corner from you. Our home is a work in progress as well – and now we have the added task of baby proofing! If you are now “in” on the MOTH list, could you invite me? I’m interested in getting to know some of the other new moms in the area and swapping advice.
We have been advised to get on daycare waiting lists asap as well, but are also interested in a nanny share. If that’s something you are still pursuing at any point, I’d love to talk more about it.
Thanks!
Anne

Recently my husband and I had our Capitol Hill row home re-pointed and painted. We used Edgar’s Masonry, a highly recommended masonry contractor that was very professional and accommodated our requests.
Prior to the completion of our project we received several bids from other mason contractors one of which was Pointing Plus, a well know Capitol Hill façade restoration company. My experience with the company was none other than disappointing and extremely unprofessional. First we received a bid and hired Pointing Plus to do the work to only have the owner come back 6 days later with an increased price. At that point I hired Edgar’s Masonry.
A week into the project we decided we wanted to remove the paint from the brick and Edgar said he could do that, so we proceeded. The day they started to remove the paint a DCRA inspector can to our house requesting a Lead Paint Test for the paint, which the contractor had already tested the paint and it had no lead present. You may or may not know but to have a DCRA inspector come to your construction site means somebody called them. We later found out that Pointing Plus was calling the city regularly to report our project. There were 3 separate times that a DCRA inspector come to our house and stopped work from continuing even though the contractor was compliant with all rules and regulations.
All in all, work was stopped for 3 weeks due to Pointing Plus calling the city and complaining about our job, just because he was not awarded the job. My advice is DO NOT HIRE POINTING PLUS!

Hello Moms!
I am the Accommodations Coordinator at Kaplan International Center. As a Hill resident myself, I can’t imagine a better place for international students to live and experience American culture while mastering the English language. We are searching for warm, friendly families who are interested in hosting students short term. Our host families in the past have expressed wonderful stories about their experiences. If you would like more information, please reply… if not (that’s okay too!), please pass this message along to friends and family that you believe would provide a good home for our students. We provide support to the families and adequate compensation.
Thank you for your time and help!
Cheers.
Hi! My name is Michael McCollum(female) I am a recent graduate of Ole Miss! I babysit for several families in the DC area but recently moved to the hill and would like to start babysitting in the afternoons closer to home! Will someone please add me to the list serv. I currently babysit for children ages 6months-10 years. Thank you!
-Michael
I’ve lived on the hill for 6 years and recently found out I am 6 weeks pregnant. Is it too early to ask for an invite so I can get the inside scoop on schools, daycare, and other kid friendly things? Someone, please invite me to the club.
I will be hanging around Easter market play area tomorrow afternoon if any of you moms want to meet up!
Parents looking for schools with diversity and fairness to all children, please do not send your children to Brent E.S. IT is full of clicks, tbe principal has absolutely no control over the School. There is a group of parents that runs the whole operation they are more concerned with fundraising and making the school pretty than making sure the students get the best elementary school experience possible.Outofboundary students will be treated unfair and their parents harassed.
Hi Mommies!
